Michael Anthony Gaskins

I came into this world in Bryan, Texas on December 10, 1986. My parents (in their infinite wisdom) named me after the bass guitarist from Van Halen and exposed me to numerous genres of music ranging from classic rock, funk, jazz, Motown, R&B, and country. They bought my first saxophone over 20 years ago from a pharmacist and his wife who "just happened to have one lying around" from their older son who lost interest. I spent countless hours in my room each day learning to play songs by ear ranging from Bob Seger, Pink Floyd, Candy Dulfer, James Brown, and Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass and eventually learned to improvise.

After graduating from Caldwell High School in 2005, I took an academic scholarship and moved to Brenham, Texas to study biology at Blinn College. Through a series of fortunate events and a new friend, I was coaxed into auditioning for the Blinn College Band by a dear friend and ended up receiving another scholarship - eventually becoming the principal chair tenor saxophonist for The Blinn College Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo.

Shortly after, I began to fulfill my lifelong dream of becoming an Aggie and studied genetics at Texas A&M University. I spent the remainder of my college career juggling a full-time course load, working multiple jobs, doing genetic research, teaching chemistry and gigging whenever I could. Many evenings were spent playing in a trio at the Casablanca Piano Bar at Christopher's World Grille with two very talented musicians -pianist D.A. McDowell and drummer Michael Holleman. I eventually ventured out and had the pleasure of adding sax to The Legendary Old School Band, Tubie and the Touchtones, Datura Midnight Express, Eugene Smith & The Solid Foundation Band, and a number of other bands throughout the Brazos Valley and the Texas Hill Country. I have also performed with Austin Music Legend Margaret Wright, Grammy-winning keyboardist Bobby Sparks, and the legendary R&B saxophonist Elliot Fikes.

I spent my post-college years pursuing a career in analytical chemistry and business oil and gas, pharmaceutical, environmental, biotechnology, and semiconductor industries, which allowed me to travel the world and meet many wonderful people. I currently reside near scenic Marble Falls, Texas and am working on my MBA from Texas A&M-CC. In my free time, I enjoy traveling, taking photographs, spending time with my two Brussels Griffons, cruising the backroads in my classic cars (2002 Trans Am WS6 convertible and 1970 Corvette LS5), making some waves on the lake, cooking, gardening, and creating memories with friends and family.
